Theory Test

In order to sit your practical driving test, you must first pass your driving theory test. This test comprises of two parts:

  • multiple choice
  • hazard perception

You must pass both parts. You either fail or pass the whole test, so you cannot re-take only one area.

The test lasts for 57 minutes, and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. The reason for the timing being 57 minutes is to allow you a short break before the hazard perception test begins.

Although you are given instructions on how each part of the test works on the day, we strongly advise you prepare thoroughly prior to your test day - by using the Highway Code and practice tests to familiarise yourself with the format.

The hazard perception test is a series of video clips, generally scenes you would expect to encounter on the raod. There will be a 'developing hazard', but one clip will feature two. A developing hazard is defined as:

"something that may result in you having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction"
www.gov.uk

Scoring is calculated by your response time, the earlier you notice the hazard the higher you will score. Be careful of continually clicking, as it may appear that you are cheating. In such a scenario you will score zero for that particular clip.

The pass mark for the hazard perception part of the test is 44 out of 75.

You will receive your results at the test centre, where hopefully you will get your pass certificate.

How to prepare

There are numerous books, CDs, DVDs and other materials available for your theory test. These can vary in price, and many can be very over-complicated, dense, and difficult to navigate. You may also have family members who have materials, but we would urge you to exercise caution because old materials can quickly become dated with the introduction of new signs, new rules, and general developments which you are expected to be aware of.

There is no one source which we recommend, with the exception of the Highway Code and 'Know your traffic signs' - these are vital and you should obtain a copy in preparation not only for your theory test but for driving generally. Both are available online through the www.gov.uk website.

We would also recommend purchasing an interactive DVD which will allow you to prepare for your hazard perception test. The reason we reccommend these is because they are the closest representation of the actual test.
