Bay Parking
You may be asked to perform a bay park, usually if the test centre has bays in which this
maneouvre can be assessed.
- Align the car
- Reverse to reference point
- Steer full left lock
- Check left mirror
- Straighten up
- Use rear reference point
Ensure the car is in the middle of the road. This improves turning circle and therefore makes the maneouvre easier. Stop, apply your handbrake and select reverse. If there are pedestrians or other vehicles, this shows an intention to reverse.
Reverse the vehicle to your reference point. This is can vary according to vehicles and spaces, so we can discuss particular reference points during lessons.
You will first need to make observations: all round observation and then check your blind spot. The front of the car will swing out and may be a danger to passing vehicles or pedestrians.
As you reverse, you should see the left hand line of the space appear in the left hand mirror. You should be able to gauge how far from the line you are, and therefore whether you need to adjust. You will then see the right hand line appear in your right hand mirror.
When the line appear to be parallel with your car, straighten up. To ajdust without drawing forward again, simply steer towards the line you want to get closer to.
You should use a rear reference point to ensure you do not reverse too far, and possible collide with whatever is behind you.
