Reverse Around a Corner
Reverse around a corner is not a particularly complicated maneouvre, and the following guidance
should be accomplished easily.
- Pull over
- Get in position
- Straight reverse
- Make further observations
- Steer left around the corner
- Keep an eye on those mirrors
- Straighten up
The examiner will ask you to pull over at a safe and convenient point, whereupon they will tell you to perform a reverse around a corner.
A good parking position is generally 6 inches for the kerb, but give yourself some extra room. Ensure the car and steering is straight.
You will need to perform a straight reverse. You should make all round observations prior to moving off. Reverse until the straight kerb disappears from the view of your left hand mirror. This tells you the rear of your car is in line with the start of the corner.
Before beginning your turn, you should make all round observations. Situations can change quickly, and you do not want to fail your test on that basis..
The amound of steer required varies according to how sharp the bend is. Use one full turn as a starting point. This may be sufficient, or you may have to make alterations to your steering depending on your car is responding.
Your car should be going very slowly throughout, giving you time to check your mirrors. You should aim to keep the kerb in your left mirror throughout your turn. If you lose sight of it, you will need to make a correction. You must react quickly to what is happening in your left mirror.
When the kerb is parallel with your car you will need to straight reverse to a safe point on the road. Then apply the handbrake and select neutral.
